2-Step Verification Overview
Google Ads requires 2-step verification (2SV) for all advertiser accounts to enhance security. This requirement ensures that only authorized users can access and modify advertising campaigns.
Setup Methods
| Method | How It Works | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Authenticator | Time-based codes from mobile app | Best for most users |
| SMS/Phone Call | Code sent via text or voice call | Backup method |
| Security Key | Hardware key (e.g., YubiKey) | Best for high-security needs |
| Google Prompts | Push notification to mobile device | Fastest method |
Setup Steps
- Go to Google Account → Security
- Under "Signing in to Google," click "2-Step Verification"
- Click "Get started"
- Choose your preferred verification method
- Follow the prompts to complete setup
- Save backup codes: Store in a secure location
For Manager Accounts (MCC)
If you manage multiple accounts through an MCC:
- Ensure 2SV is enabled on the MCC login email
- Verify all linked sub-accounts have 2SV-enabled users
- Set up backup admin access
- Document the verification process for team members
Compliance Requirements
| Requirement | Deadline | Consequence of Non-Compliance |
|---|---|---|
| 2SV enabled on account | As required by Google | Account access restricted |
| Customer verification form | When prompted | Ads may stop serving |
Troubleshooting
- Lost phone: Use backup codes or alternate verification method
- New phone: Update 2SV settings before deactivating old device
- Team member left: Remove their access immediately; ensure new team members set up 2SV
- Multiple accounts: Use separate 2SV for each account or consolidate via MCC
