Why Ad Extensions Matter
Ad extensions (now called "ad assets" in Google Ads) are additional pieces of information that expand your text ads to make them more useful to users. They serve three key purposes:
Boost Engagement
Helpful ad extensions make your ads more likely to match users' immediate needs — their intent, device, interests, and location signals. This increases ad relevance and encourages more active engagement.
Improve Ad Quality
Ad format impacts ad rank. When calculating the expected impact of ad formats, Google considers relevance, click-through rate (CTR), and prominence factors.
Better-Qualified Leads
When users see relevant information before clicking, they're more likely to convert. Users who click after seeing what to expect on your landing page are more qualified.
Types of Ad Extensions
Sitelink Extensions
Sitelinks are additional links displayed below your search ad text, directing users to specific pages on your website.
- Increase engagement: Adding sitelinks can boost average CTR, including for brand-term searches
- Drive conversions: Direct users to the right page, reducing steps to conversion
- Easy management: Add at account, campaign, or ad group level — no separate bidding or keywords needed
Best practice: Use 8-10 effective sitelinks per campaign. Ensure your site has enough content for at least two sitelinks. Sitelink URLs must differ from the main ad's final URL.
Callout Extensions
Callouts are short, non-clickable snippets of text (25 characters each) that highlight key selling points like "Free Shipping," "24/7 Support," or "Price Match Guarantee."
- Add up to 20 callouts per campaign or ad group
- Use concise, specific benefits — not generic claims
- Callouts cannot link to pages or contain promotional codes
Structured Snippet Extensions
Structured snippets use predefined headers (e.g., "Amenities," "Brands," "Destinations") to showcase a list of products or services.
- Choose from 12 predefined header types
- Add 3-10 values per header (25 characters each)
- Values must be items, not descriptions
Other Extension Types
| Extension | Use Case | Character Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Call Extension | Display phone number in ad | N/A (auto-formatted) |
| Location Extension | Show business address | N/A (from Google Business Profile) |
| Price Extension | Display product prices | Header: 25 chars, Description: 25 chars |
| App Extension | Link to mobile app store | N/A (app ID) |
| Promotion Extension | Show special offers | Promotion text: 20 chars |
Best Practices
- Use all relevant extensions: More extensions = more ad real estate and higher CTR
- Align with landing pages: Extension content should match landing page content
- Schedule extensions: Time-sensitive extensions (promotions) should be scheduled
- Monitor performance: Check extension performance in Google Ads UI
